Course Description:

This elective is designed to appeal to the student reader who enjoys the genres of science fiction and/or fantasy. The course is designed to distinguish science fiction from fantasy and how it reveals insight into the human condition, both real and imagined. We study the Hero’s Journey as defined by Joseph Campbell and examine the themes of utopia and dystopia through a variety of literature. We study a variety of authors (Shelley, Keyes, Orwell, Huxley, Rand, Clarke, and Asimov) so that students will broaden their literary interest, improve their reading comprehension, and enhance their writing skills.
