Students will read at least four novels from a variety of authors and genres to determine novel structure, characterization, and various literary devices such as symbols, foreshadowing, irony, etc. Students will compare and contrast elements within and between novels, one of which will be student-chosen for an independent reading unit.
In addition, students will write a variety of essays ranging from argumentative to informative to narrative. Setting, characterization, plot, theme, and symbols are examined. Lastly, students will keep a personal journal that reflects on the reading and classroom discussions.
No prerequisites class required unless stated in the course description.
